Tinubu’s Statement on Opposition Collapse Is Shocking – PDP’s Ologbondiyan Raises Alarm”
Former PDP Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, has described President Bola Tinubu’s denial of any plans to create a one-party state in Nigeria as “strange” and unconvincing.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ologbondiyan made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Friday, reacting to President Tinubu’s Democracy Day address to a joint session of the National Assembly.
In his Thursday address, President Tinubu dismissed growing concerns over the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s alleged attempts to suppress opposition parties and consolidate power. “To those who ring the alarm that the APC is intent on a one-party state, I offer you a most personal promise. While your alarm may be as a result of your panic, it rings in error,” Tinubu had said.
However, Ologbondiyan argued that the president’s assurances do not align with the current political realities.
“We didn’t expect Mr. President to publicly admit involvement in efforts to establish a one-party state,” Ologbondiyan said, casting doubt on the sincerity of Tinubu’s remarks.
He also criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its handling of political party registrations, claiming it has denied recognition to groups that have fulfilled all legal requirements.
“I haven’t seen the president make any comments about electoral reform. Even in his Democracy Day speech, he didn’t mention that INEC is yet to register some parties,” he noted. “There’s a group that met all the registration requirements and was told to come for their certificate, but day after day, they still haven’t received it.”
Ologbondiyan insisted that despite the president’s public denials, both the conduct and rhetoric of APC leaders suggest a calculated move toward single-party dominance.
“It’s strange for the president to claim he’ll never be involved in a one-party plot, especially when some of his own cabinet members have gone on national TV to mock the opposition and question the viability of other parties,” he added. “Even without issuing direct orders, the actions and attitude of his administration are telling.”
