The heartbreaking incident occurred around 6 p.m. in the Barakallahu area during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, when a speeding vehicle veered off the road and rammed into pedestrians waiting by the roadside.
The victims, mostly women and children, had just visited their grandmother’s home for the holiday. The vehicle involved—a Mercedes GLK SUV—was reportedly driven by a young boy from Rigachikun, who fled the scene immediately after the crash. Witnesses allege that the boy’s father is a well-known political figure in the community.
“We lost eight family members that evening,” said Malam Jamilu Usman Mai Yadi, a grieving husband and father from Sabon Gari, Tudun Wada, quoted by Daily Trust.
“My wife, Khadija Umar, our two sons—Sadiq, 16, and Muhammad, 9—along with her two sisters and their aunt, all died. Ten members of our family were hit in total; eight died, and two are still in critical condition at the hospital.”
Mai Yadi explained that his family members had been waiting for transportation when the vehicle, allegedly speeding, suddenly lost control and ploughed into them.
“The impact was horrific. My wife’s leg was mangled. My son Sadiq’s body was found and returned to us later by road safety officials,” he recounted with anguish.
Among the deceased was Zainab Muhammad, who was eight months pregnant with twins. Her husband, Sulaiman Abdulkadir Mai Shinkafa, a cleric from Hayin Rigasa, shared the pain of his unimaginable loss.
“She was due any moment. We had everything ready. We had even named the twins—Hassan and Hussaini,” he said. “Our six-year-old son, Khalid, was also hit. Her body was crushed. Khalid’s bones shattered. We had to use planks to gather their remains for burial. No family should ever have to go through this.”
