Enough Is Enough! Afenifere Leader Says Nigeria Must Return to 1963 Constitution Now!”

The National Leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has called on Nigeria’s leaders and citizens to revisit the foundational ideals of federalism enshrined in the 1963 Republican Constitution, describing it as the bedrock for national unity and sustainable progress.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement marking Democracy Day (June 12), Fasoranti emphasized the need for the country to return to the 1963 Constitution, which he said provided the structural framework for true federalism—allowing Nigeria’s diverse regions to operate with a degree of autonomy.

“Federalism, as practiced in the First Republic, allowed the component parts of the country to enjoy a level of self-determination. That’s what we need to rebuild unity and drive genuine development,” he stated.

He criticised Nigeria’s current centralised system of governance, calling it ill-suited for the country’s complexity, and warned that only a return to proper federal structures would reduce regional tensions and promote balanced growth.

While applauding the achievement of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, Fasoranti stressed the urgent need for deep structural reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

He also paid tribute to the courage of pro-democracy activists, including civil society groups and the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), who played critical roles in ending military rule and ushering in the Fourth Republic.

“Our continued democratic experience is a result of the tireless efforts and sacrifices made by committed patriots who stood for civil governance,” he noted.

Fasoranti expressed optimism that the spirit of progressive activism would continue to uphold democratic values and inspire future generations.

Addressing the nation’s worsening security challenges, he lamented that despite various interventions, violent non-state actors still hold many parts of the country hostage. As a solution, he strongly advocated for the establishment of State Police and Community Policing, describing them as practical steps towards restoring peace and order.

“Afenifere, like many well-meaning Nigerians, believes that the creation of State Police and local policing systems is the realistic answer to our deepening insecurity,” Fasoranti declared.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to embrace the spirit of June 12, rise above ethnic and political divisions, and recommit themselves to building a united and prosperous nation.

According to a viral video circulating online, the former Ogun State governor confirmed the development while addressing his supporters from a branded campaign bus associated with the OGD/PBAT Movement.

In the video, Daniel alleged that the meeting’s outcome would not stand, insisting that he and his group had been barred from entering the venue despite being part of the party structure in the region.

He stated that although they were present for the APC Ogun East caucus meeting, they were denied access, describing any resolutions taken at the gathering as invalid.

The invitation for the emergency stakeholders’ meeting, issued by party leaders in Ijebu Ode, reportedly included deputy governors, serving and former local government chairmen, councillors, and past and present lawmakers at both state and federal levels.

In a related development, Daniel recently referred to his successor, Ibikunle Amosun, as an “enfant terrible successor” during a church service marking his 70th birthday in Sagamu, where Amosun was also in attendance.

Both politicians were once close allies before a political fallout that began ahead of the 2007 governorship election, when Amosun challenged Daniel’s re-election bid. The rivalry intensified further in the 2011 political cycle, deepening the divide between the two former governors.

Speaking at the event, Daniel remarked that Amosun’s early political ambition played a role in their fallout during his time in office.
