The announcement was made during his address to a joint session of the National Assembly in celebration of Democracy Day.
The ruling, delivered on Tuesday, followed a motion dated June 3, 2025 (Suit No. MIL/1M/2025), filed by the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Ajibade Alabi, against the embattled priest. The Chief Magistrate declared:
“This honourable court hereby directs the respondent, Adetolaju, to vacate the Owa Orin premises located at Egbeku, Irorin Quarters, Ilawe Ekiti. The respondent’s stay there was tied to his position as the Ororin and Deity Priest of Orinlase. However, following his suspension by the Ekiti State Government as shown in exhibit EKA2, he must vacate the premises pending a final resolution.”
Following Adetolaju’s suspension and the subsequent appointment of Omo Orin Tunde Bamgbotogun as acting Ororin by Oba Alabi, the monarch approached the court for legal backing to reclaim the sacred residence.
The Alawe, in his application, sought an order compelling the suspended priest to immediately vacate the premises, which he described as the official and traditional residence of the reigning Ororin and Deity Priest of Orinlase. He also requested any additional reliefs the court deemed appropriate.
Representing Oba Alabi, Dr. Emmanuel Adetifa argued that the Owa Orin is not private property but a cultural institution meant solely for a sitting Ororin. He emphasized that with a new acting priest already in place, Adetolaju’s continued occupancy was improper.
Supporting documents presented in court included:
-
A letter dated May 15, 2025, requesting permission to suspend Adetolaju for “flagrant disrespect and violation of traditional laws.”
-
A follow-up response dated May 21, 2025.
-
An official suspension letter dated the same day, May 21, 2025.
The case underscores a growing legal emphasis on the protection of cultural institutions and accountability among traditional officeholders.
