Obi vs LP: Tensions Explode Over 2027 Ambitions, Allegations of Political Blackmail
Tensions within the Labour Party have intensified as a rift between its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the party leadership continues to widen. The latest escalation comes amid fresh allegations and denials over the party’s direction as the 2027 general election approaches.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement on Tuesday, the party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, accused Obi of engaging in a deliberate media campaign to discredit the National Chairman, Julius Abure, and other senior officials. Farouk’s remarks were in response to Obi’s recent interview on Arise Television, where he claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had infiltrated the Labour Party to instigate internal instability.
Dismissing the claims as baseless, the party challenged Obi to provide concrete proof. “Obi’s repeated accusations are part of a calculated media blackmail against the leadership,” Farouk said. “When pressed for evidence, he failed to present any verifiable facts.”
Farouk further accused Obi of misrepresenting the root of the internal discord, asserting that the former governor and Abia State Governor Alex Otti—who he said remains suspended from the party—are to blame for much of the chaos.
He rejected any suggestion that external forces, including the APC, were responsible for the internal strife, urging Obi to take responsibility for what he described as a failure in leadership. “No one is above criticism. When leaders fall short, they should accept accountability instead of passing blame,” Farouk added.
Despite Obi’s criticisms, Farouk noted that his acknowledgment of Julius Abure as party chairman during the Arise TV interview amounted to tacit recognition of the current leadership’s legitimacy. “Abure remains the authentic national chairman of the Labour Party. That matter is settled. We encourage Obi and others to embrace unity and move forward,” he said.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi has continued to advocate for political renewal. At the launch of the book “Obi: The Political Change Agent” by journalist Ike Abonyi in Abuja, he called on Nigerians to elect leaders with empathy and integrity in 2027, likening Nigeria’s situation to the doomed Titanic.
“We must ensure that those entering the National Assembly and other offices in 2027 are people who will serve the country, not those chasing wealth,” Obi stated.
He decried a political culture driven by self-interest and stressed the need for citizens to be actively engaged in the coming elections. Obi reaffirmed that the Labour Party would mobilize to safeguard electoral integrity and ensure that every vote is counted.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
