Election Controversy Rocks FUOYE: Students Demand Justice Over Alleged Rigging
Students of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, have expressed outrage over what they describe as a deliberate manipulation of the recently conducted Student Union Government (SUG) elections by the university authorities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In separate interviews with PUNCH Metro on Monday and Tuesday, several students alleged that the university compromised the integrity of the May 24, 2025, election to favour preferred candidates aligned with the administration.
A student identified as Ajayi claimed that the electoral guidelines were flouted to rig the outcome.
“There was clear bias and unfairness. The election was supposed to run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., but it didn’t start until 12:30 p.m. due to technical problems,” he said.
He further explained, “At 5:00 p.m., when our candidate was in the lead, they suddenly extended the voting time without any justification. Then they extended it again from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
“During that period, the result page began showing ‘Error 504’. We tried accessing it with VPNs, but nothing worked. Even with the illegal extension, voting should have stopped at 6:00 p.m.”
Another student, Ola, echoed Ajayi’s frustration, accusing both the university’s ICT team and management of orchestrating election interference across multiple positions.
“They didn’t just tamper with the presidential vote. The ICT team and university authorities were deeply involved. At first, voting required OTP verification. But when our candidate was ahead, they suddenly removed that requirement.”
He demanded a rerun, insisting the school should adhere strictly to its own electoral rules.
Remi, another student from the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, claimed that his faculty was deliberately sidelined and the vote count was manipulated at the final hour.
“This isn’t new. The school has a track record of manipulating elections to impose their favourites,” he said.
He explained that the election didn’t start on time due to technical issues. “Although it was scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., it only began at noon. Then, just before the revised closing time of 6:00 p.m., they extended voting again by an hour without informing students.”
He detailed how the OTP system failed many students. “The OTPs weren’t delivered. Ten of us went to the situation room in Ado to report the problem, and we suggested removing OTP to prevent voter suppression. The CSO refused, saying rules couldn’t be changed midway.”
However, he said, “Minutes before closing, they removed the OTP anyway and then shut down the portal. At 7:00 p.m., our candidate, Olaleye Temitope Oluwagbemiga, was leading by 13 votes.
“Just two minutes later, the system crashed, and then they declared his opponent the winner by 19 votes. We’re left in the dark as to how that result was calculated.”
