Tension in APC: Ndume Risks Sanctions for Explosive ‘Jonathan Treatment’ Statement
While emphasising its tolerance for diverse opinions, the APC stated that there are disciplinary procedures in place for members who breach party decorum.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with our correspondent on Monday, the party’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, reaffirmed that the APC remains open to differing viewpoints, as long as they align with the party’s core principles and ideals.
Ndume had on Sunday, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, expressed concern that President Tinubu could face a major electoral upset in 2027 if he fails to address the prevailing economic challenges and growing public discontent. He likened the situation to that of Jonathan in 2015, who, despite backing from 22 governors, was defeated by then-APC candidate Muhammadu Buhari.
“The same scenario could play out,” Ndume warned. “Jonathan had wide endorsements just like we do now. But look what happened—he lost badly. Tinubu could suffer the same fate if care isn’t taken.”
He noted that the growing hardship and complacency within the party, coupled with overreliance on elite endorsements, could alienate grassroots supporters—vital to securing electoral victory.
“There’s already talk of automatic tickets for lawmakers. That’s a dangerous path. Who will be the foot soldiers if you ignore your base?” he asked.
Ndume, however, did not entirely write off Tinubu’s re-election chances. He urged the President to act swiftly and implement policies that will improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
“There’s still time to fix things. If within the next two years the President can genuinely ease people’s suffering, nobody will stand a chance against him,” he said.
In response, the APC’s Bala Ibrahim acknowledged Ndume as a respected figure within the party who has previously expressed critical views. However, he cautioned that all members must express dissent constructively and in line with the party’s progressive ethos.
“Senator Ndume is a senior member of the APC and has, on several occasions, voiced his opinions—sometimes opposing government actions. We welcome such input, but there are limits when comments verge on undermining party unity,” Ibrahim said.
