Don’t Spark Global Crisis – SERAP Cautions Presidency on Wike’s Embassy Crackdown!
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and halt what it described as a “purported threat” by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to shut down 34 foreign embassies in Abuja over unpaid ground rents.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement shared via its official (Twitter) account on Monday, June 9, SERAP warned that such an action would violate international law and established diplomatic conventions.
Citing Article 22 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, SERAP emphasized the inviolability of diplomatic missions, stressing that their premises are protected from search, requisition, seizure, or enforcement actions.
“President Tinubu must urgently restrain Minister Wike and ensure the immediate withdrawal of the threat to close embassies.
Article 22(1) clearly states that ‘[t]he premises of the mission shall be inviolable,’ while Article 22(3) confirms that the property and transport of diplomatic missions are immune from search, requisition, attachment or execution,” SERAP said.
The warning follows recent revelations from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) that at least 34 embassies in Abuja have outstanding ground rent debts dating back as far as 2014, totaling ₦3.66 million.
The embassies in question reportedly include those of Ghana, Russia, China, Germany, India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and the European Union, among others. The debts range from as low as ₦150 to over ₦1 million, with notable sums owed by the Zambia High Commission (₦1.18 million), Indonesia’s Defence Attaché (₦1.71 million), and China’s Economic and Commercial Counsellor’s Office (₦12,000).
On May 26, Minister Wike directed enforcement action against 4,794 properties, including diplomatic premises, for failure to settle ground rents spanning 10 to 43 years. The inclusion of foreign missions in the directive sparked widespread concern.
Following public backlash and diplomatic sensitivities, President Tinubu intervened, granting a 14-day grace period for embassies to comply — a window set to close today (Monday).

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
