UK-Based Nurse Shocks Nigerians: ‘Selling Property to Relocate Is Smart!’”

Published

on

Kevin Ossai, a registered nurse and Health Protection Practitioner with Walsall Council in Lichfield, England, speaks with Biodun Busari about the realities of relocating abroad in search of better opportunities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Why did you leave Nigeria?
I left because I couldn’t see a sustainable future for myself there. Nigeria is a beautiful country, but corruption, job insecurity, and poor infrastructure made long-term prospects bleak. I reached a point where I felt the best gift I could offer my children was a chance at a better life in a developed country.

Despite working hard as a contract staff member, I earned far less than others doing less work. I was also routinely harassed by police during random stop-and-searches, often treated as a suspect just for being young. In my office, we used phone torches because of constant power outages. By 2019, I knew it was time to move.

Did you or your family sell property to fund your relocation?
No. I didn’t need to sell anything. I strategically planned my move through nursing, which was in high demand at the time. The UK offered a full relocation package—free flights, visas, accommodation, and some allowances. It was pre-COVID, so support for migrant nurses was more generous.

That said, I believe selling an asset to pursue a verified job abroad is absolutely reasonable. If you have a genuine employer, have gone through a proper interview process, and there are no shady fees, then parting with a car or land for a better future isn’t a bad decision.

What’s your response to Nigerians who say the grass isn’t greener abroad?
It’s important to be realistic. Life abroad isn’t perfect, but Nigeria has its own share of challenges. You might earn ₦1 million monthly and own property, but what if the government demolishes it? You’ll still struggle with power outages, high fuel costs for generators, and expensive data. Every system has its flaws—you just need to choose the challenges you’re willing to face.

What’s your view on the UK’s White Paper and stricter immigration policies?
While I don’t support the tougher rules, I understand the UK’s stance. Policy is driven by data. When the social care visa opened in 2022, it attracted a massive influx—some legitimate, some not. With economic pressure mounting, the government tightened controls: extending the path to residency, limiting dependents, and clamping down on fake sponsorships.

Ideally, these measures should target fraudsters, not hardworking migrants who contribute to the system.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
