No Roof, No Toilets, No Dignity!’ – Ozekhome Decries Collapse of Nigerian Court Infrastructure”
Renowned constitutional lawyer and human rights advocate, Professor Mike Ozekhome (SAN), has called for increased funding and better welfare packages for Nigeria’s judiciary, warning that sustained neglect could erode the justice system’s effectiveness.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Channels Television’s “Hard Copy” on Saturday, Ozekhome lamented the appalling condition of many court facilities across the country, describing them as “dilapidated infrastructures” where judges are still forced to record proceedings by hand.
He argued that the rot in the judiciary reflects broader societal decay, stating: “Garbage in, garbage out.”
“We’ve seen footage of some of these courtrooms—I wouldn’t sit in such places myself—yet they’re supposed to serve as halls of justice. They’ve been abandoned for too long,” he said.
Ozekhome emphasized that judges, like all citizens, are vulnerable to the pressures of a corrupt environment unless adequately supported. He insisted that they must be “treated with respect” and well-compensated to maintain judicial integrity.
The Senior Advocate acknowledged recent steps by the federal government to improve judicial remuneration, noting the passage of a new law last year that raised Supreme Court justices’ salaries to around ₦54 million annually, or approximately ₦5.3 million per month.
While he conceded that the raise may not fully counter the effects of inflation, he described it as “a step in the right direction.”
Nevertheless, Ozekhome maintained that more reforms are urgently needed. Citing an old saying, he remarked, “A corrupt judge is more dangerous than a man with a dagger,” arguing that while a dagger-wielding man can be subdued, a corrupt judge “destroys the moral fabric of society.”
He underscored the judiciary’s central role in maintaining balance between the citizenry and the state, stressing that judges must be properly equipped—financially and structurally—to perform their duties without fear or compromise.
Ozekhome’s remarks come on the heels of the recent suspension of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) strike, which had been driven by demands for improved wages and better working conditions within the judicial sector.
