Explosive Rift: NSCDC Alleges Police Shielding Criminal Mining Syndicates

Published

on

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has accused the Nigeria Police Force of sabotaging its operations against illegal mining activities in Nasarawa State, alleging that certain officers are actively shielding suspects and obstructing ongoing investigations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to reports, Commander of the Mining Marshals, Attah John Onoja, made these serious allegations in a petition dated June 2, 2025, which he submitted to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

Onoja specifically accused officers from the Force Intelligence Department (FID), led by CSP Abdulmajeed Abisoye Oyewumi, of not only protecting illegal mining suspects from prosecution but also endangering NSCDC officers through acts of harassment, illegal arrests, and even gunfire.

The petition outlined that in October 2024, the Mining Marshals — a specialized team under Operation Hayakin Kogo — apprehended several individuals involved in unlawful mining, including one Ali Tanko and his Chinese partners. These arrests, Onoja noted, stemmed from a complaint filed by Capital Apex Synergy Global Ltd., which holds legitimate mining rights in Rafin Gabas, within Kokona Local Government Area of the state.

The detained suspects allegedly confessed to operating without a mining license since 2021 and were subsequently charged at the Federal High Court in Abuja, under suit numbers FHC/ABJ/CR/577/2024 and FHC/ABJ/CR/131/2025.

However, Onoja claimed the prosecution efforts were derailed when police operatives began interfering in the investigation, even deploying officers to the contested site. He cited an incident on April 3, 2025, in which four police officers reportedly opened fire on NSCDC personnel. These officers were disarmed and handed over to police authorities along with their weapons.

Onoja described the shooting as an attempted murder, noting that the Inspector General of Police failed to initiate an investigation—mirroring a similar episode in February 2025, when NSCDC officers allegedly came under fire while protecting another illegal mining site in Ondo State.

In a separate confrontation on April 8, 2025, CSP Abdulmajeed allegedly led a team of around 30 police officers to Rafin Gabas, where they reportedly assaulted and detained four NSCDC operatives, confiscated their arms and belongings, and tried to pressure them into falsely implicating their commander in wrongdoing.

Onoja further alleged that the Police secured a restraining order against the NSCDC through an ex parte motion at the Federal High Court, leveling unsubstantiated accusations of illegal mining and even homicide — without presenting a death certificate or credible evidence. He described the order as “fraudulently obtained” and revealed that the NSCDC has filed a motion to vacate it, arguing that the order was based on false claims, suppression of critical facts, and lacked proper jurisdiction.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has strongly opposed reported moves by the state government to revisit the alleged Offa robbery case involving former Governor Abubakar Bukola Saraki and others.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

PDP urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to focus on governance rather than what it described as attempts to revive old political narratives.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

reports that Showunmi made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) secretariat in Abeokuta on Friday.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.

He advocated issue-based campaigns ahead of 2027, rejecting “money politics” and challenging aspirants to public debates on governance.

Showunmi maintained that he has no history of violence or political thuggery, insisting the election should be centred on ideas and development plans for the state.

In response, IPAC leadership and other political actors at the event called for collaboration and careful selection of leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
