The Federal Government has ramped up discussions with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to accelerate the rollout of a ¥15 billion (approximately $110 million) emergency loan aimed at boosting food security nationwide.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This was revealed in a statement from the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Coordinating Ministry of the Economy on Wednesday, following a high-level meeting involving Finance Minister Wale Edun, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Senator Abubakar Kyari, and top JICA officials.

“The meeting advanced the implementation of the Food Security Emergency Loan Support Programme,” the statement said, noting that the facility is intended to strengthen Nigeria’s food production systems and improve resilience amid ongoing global supply chain disruptions and domestic inflation.

With the rainy season already in progress, both ministers underscored the urgency of fast-tracking key aspects of the programme to deliver timely support to farmers and rural communities.

JICA welcomed the government’s renewed commitment but requested formal clarification on proposed changes to the implementation strategy. It was agreed that core agricultural production activities would commence immediately under the current framework, while other elements such as aggregation and financing would be reviewed in alignment with the original loan terms.

This renewed engagement comes shortly after President Bola Tinubu sought the National Assembly’s approval for a new $21.5 billion external borrowing plan under the 2025–2026 framework. Included in the proposal are the ¥15 billion loan from Japan and a €51 million grant to support key development projects.

In his submission to lawmakers, Tinubu said the borrowing initiatives are aimed at driving employment, entrepreneurship, skill development, poverty reduction, and improved food security across Nigeria.
