After the Blast, the Billions Flow – Oyo Begins ₦4.8bn Compensation for Bodija Survivors

The announcement was made during a joint press briefing by the Bodija Estate Residents’ Association (BERA), the Dejo Oyelese Vigilante Group, and representatives of the broader Bodija community, held in Ibadan, the state capital.
According to The PUNCH, the relief fund stems from recommendations following the devastating January 17, 2024 explosion, which caused widespread destruction. The blast—allegedly triggered by explosives stored by illegal miners—destroyed 77 houses, left many injured, and claimed five lives.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, BERA President Muyiwa Bamgbose described the payout as a “long-awaited but vital step in the healing and rebuilding process.”
He expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde for honoring his pledge, stating, “This disbursement brings renewed hope to those still grappling with the physical, emotional, and economic impact of that tragic day.”
Bamgbose commended Makinde’s “compassionate leadership and steadfast pursuit of justice,” noting that the compensation reflects the government’s responsiveness to its citizens’ plight.
He further explained that the Relief Fund Management and Disbursement Committee, chaired by the Deputy Governor, approved a total of ₦4.08 billion after thorough assessments by professional agencies.
A total of 318 buildings within a 500-meter blast radius were identified, with compensation also earmarked for families of the deceased, 102 registered tenants, and owners of 37 damaged vehicles.
Bamgbose also acknowledged the coordinated humanitarian and technical response provided by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Oyo State Emergency Management Agency, University College Hospital, the Nigerian Red Cross, DSS, and NSCDC, while emphasizing BERA’s role in mobilizing community support.

The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.

Suspicious Circumstances: Raising questions about the sudden deaths, Nasera noted that the detainees had eaten well the day before, speculating that heat exposure or some form of administered substance may have been involved.

Lack of Verification: It remains unverified whether Babangida personally owns the operation, holds a mining license, or owns the land, as the NSCDC maintains that the miners were operating illegally.
