Stop Flying Abroad for Treatment!” – Dangote Pushes for Homegrown Healthcare Revolution
Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has called on Nigerians to halt the growing trend of medical tourism and focus on manufacturing essential drugs within the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during a panel discussion at the Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers event in Lagos on Wednesday, the billionaire industrialist stressed the importance of building a robust healthcare system that allows citizens to receive quality treatment locally.
“We must put an end to health tourism,” Dangote said. “It’s time we start producing our own drugs. When we fall ill, we shouldn’t have to travel abroad for treatment. That’s why partnering with Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation is crucial.”
He noted that the Dangote Foundation, in collaboration with the Gates Foundation, played a major role in eradicating polio in Nigeria and has made significant strides in improving national nutrition.
Dangote also highlighted his group’s transformative business efforts. He recounted how Nigeria, once the world’s second-largest importer of cement, now exports more cement than any other African nation—thanks to local production driven by his company.
On agricultural inputs, he noted that Nigerian farmers once struggled to obtain fertilizer. Today, however, the country is home to the second-largest fertilizer plant globally—built from scratch by the Dangote Group. “Nigeria now exports 37% of our fertilizer to the United States,” he stated.
Turning to the oil sector, Dangote underscored the game-changing impact of his 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery. In May 2025 alone, the refinery exported 400,000 metric tons of petrol. “With this, Nigeria has finally broken free from its dependence on imported petrol,” he declared.
