The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has relocated to Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, in response to the relentless wave of killings by suspected herdsmen and armed militias.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

These brutal attacks—now almost a daily occurrence—have claimed numerous lives, left many injured and maimed, and reduced homes to rubble, displacing countless residents.

Sources confirm that General Oluyede departed Abuja on Tuesday morning alongside his Principal Staff Officer (PSO) and other top officials from Army Headquarters for an on-the-ground assessment of the situation in Benue.

In a decisive move, the COAS has ordered the deployment of more troops to the state to confront the militias and restore security to affected communities.

While in Benue, General Oluyede is expected to hold high-level strategy sessions with operational and unit commanders to reassess existing tactics and craft a new action plan aimed at ending the bloodshed.

He will also tour military locations and visit troops stationed in the state to boost morale and reinforce frontline readiness.

Additionally, Oluyede plans to visit villages recently attacked to reassure residents of the army’s resolve to protect lives and property. He has voiced deep concern over the surge in violence and is considering leadership changes within operational commands to strengthen the army’s effectiveness.

In a rare hands-on move, the COAS is expected to lead operations personally from the frontlines during his stay in the state, which could last several days.

The surge in violence across Benue has been described by many as ethnic cleansing. Heavily armed assailants, believed to be herders, have unleashed coordinated attacks on rural communities, leaving devastation in their wake.

Just last weekend, 43 people were massacred in renewed assaults across Gwer West and Apa Local Government Areas. This came only days after herdsmen militia ambushed and shot Rev. Fr. Solomon Atongo on the Makurdi-Naka road and ravaged four villages in Gwer West—including the hometown of Bishop Wilfred Anagbe—killing 42 people, including a mobile police officer.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
