No Retreat, No Surrender!” – Take It Back Movement to Storm Streets Nationwide on Democracy Day
The Take It Back Movement has declared its intention to stage a nationwide protest on June 12, aimed at spotlighting Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, economic hardship, and shrinking civic space.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Coordinator, Juwon Sanyaolu, the movement described the planned demonstrations as a response to what it calls the government’s persistent failure to address the country’s pressing challenges. Sanyaolu rejected the official Democracy Day celebrations, urging Nigerians to instead join peaceful protests across the country.
“We march not just for ourselves, but for the slain in Benue, the displaced in Plateau, the silenced in detention, and the starving masses abandoned by a corrupt elite,” the statement declared.
Despite police warnings and restrictions on public demonstrations, the movement vowed to proceed with protests in all state capitals and the Federal Capital Territory, asserting its unwavering commitment to the cause.
The statement strongly condemned the surge in violence and killings in Benue, Plateau, and Southern Kaduna, accusing the government of turning a blind eye to the growing crisis.
“In Plateau, Benue, Southern Kaduna, and throughout the Middle Belt, mass killings occur with frightening regularity. The dead receive no justice, the displaced receive no aid, and the killers roam freely. This carnage has become routine—and the state is complicit, either through inaction, indifference, or outright denial,” Sanyaolu stated.
He criticised the government for abandoning internally displaced persons and ignoring the escalating humanitarian crisis.
“This is not democracy—it is institutionalised cruelty,” he added, expressing the movement’s deep dissatisfaction with governance under the current administration.
Sanyaolu also lambasted the federal government’s clampdown on dissent, citing arrests of protesters, detention of activists, and intimidation of journalists and online critics under the Cybercrime Act.
“Across the country, the warning signs of democratic decay are glaring. What was won through struggle and sacrifice is being dismantled by those who once promised reform,” he said.
He accused the government of weaponising digital laws to monitor, intimidate, and silence voices of opposition, adding that even online dissent is now under surveillance.
