They Were Protecting Us!’ – Grief as Military Jet Kills Vigilantes in Mistaken Strike
No fewer than twenty vigilantes have reportedly been killed in an airstrike launched by a Nigerian military fighter jet in Zamfara State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to available information, the military jet mistakenly identified the vigilantes as bandits, following an earlier deadly attack by armed criminals in Garin Mani, a village in Maru Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that the bandits had stormed the village earlier in the day, killing several residents and abducting over fifty people who were working on their farms.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers rode into the community on motorcycles around midday, firing indiscriminately and sparking chaos among villagers.
In a swift response, local vigilantes mobilized to pursue the fleeing attackers. Tragically, a military aircraft deployed in the same operation misidentified the pursuing vigilantes as the assailants and launched an airstrike on them.
“We were chasing the bandits when the fighter jet appeared. It flew low and began bombing us. Some of us survived by pretending to be dead. When the jet finally left, we managed to escape,” one of the survivors told BBC Hausa.
A resident who wished to remain anonymous also confirmed the incident and described it as a case of mistaken identity.
“It’s clearly an unfortunate error, but the military must take responsibility and compensate the families of those affected,” he said.
He further called on the government to send more troops to the area, warning that the bandits had threatened to launch another attack.
