2027 Political Earthquake: APC Governors Clash with Tinubu, Ganduje Over Election Manipulation Plans
A quiet storm is gathering within the All Progressives Congress (APC) over plans to grant automatic return tickets to National Assembly members ahead of the 2027 general elections — a move that has reportedly won the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu but is now facing internal resistance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Leadership, two governors — one each from the South East and South West — are leading efforts to derail the proposed arrangement in their respective states. Sources say the issue may be brought before the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, after the Sallah holidays in Abuja.
Governors Split Over Tinubu’s Endorsement
Some APC governors are reportedly approaching the matter with caution, hesitant to challenge the initiative directly due to the president’s involvement. Others, however, remain firmly opposed.
Senator Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), said through his Chief Press Secretary, Hon. Oguwike Nwachuku, that he would abide by the party’s decision on the issue.
“Governor Uzodimma is a loyal party man and will stand by the party’s final stance regarding automatic return tickets for lawmakers,” Nwachuku said, clarifying that the statement only reflects Uzodimma’s position — not that of all APC governors.
Ganduje Advocates Continuity for Performing Lawmakers
During a recent meeting with party stakeholders from the North Central zone, Ganduje expressed concern over the frequent turnover in the legislature.
“We must appreciate our legislators for their support… Why do we see so many new faces every four years? Doesn’t that affect institutional memory?” Ganduje asked.
He suggested that while legal reform may not be feasible, the party could adopt advocacy to ensure capable and active lawmakers retain their seats.
Growing Rift Within APC Ranks
A source within the PGF, speaking anonymously, confirmed that not all South West governors are opposing the plan.
“Two South West governors have made it clear they are not part of the rebellion,” the source noted. “They believe that if the President is pushing this for strategic reasons, then governors should not stand in the way.”
