Buhari Divided Nigerians Along Tribal, Religious Lines – Lamido Fires!”

Published

Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has strongly criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari, accusing him of eroding Nigeria’s democratic values through a divisive political style that fostered fear, intolerance, and national disunity.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In his autobiography, Being True to Myself, launched on May 13, Lamido reflected on Buhari’s return to politics ahead of the 2011 general elections, describing it as a turning point that introduced a toxic political culture in Nigeria.

In Chapter 15 (pages 380–381), Lamido recounted the atmosphere during his 2011 re-election campaign, expressing confidence in his administration’s achievements and the strong support from the people of Jigawa.

“We approached the 2011 campaign as a mere formality,” he wrote. “We were confident in our record over the previous four years and trusted that the people, who recognized and appreciated our efforts, wouldn’t easily turn to an untested alternative.”

However, Lamido said the political terrain shifted drastically with Buhari’s re-emergence. He claimed the former military ruler brought with him a confrontational and divisive style that undermined the mutual respect and unity that once characterized Nigerian politics.

“Buhari’s return dealt a serious blow to our political environment,” Lamido stated. “He introduced a culture of hate and intolerance where there had once been harmony and mutual respect.”

He further accused Buhari of inflaming ethnic, religious, and regional sentiments, saying the former president failed to embody the dignity expected of someone who had previously led the nation.

“Buhari’s actions deepened divisions,” he wrote. “Perhaps due to his personality or military background, he didn’t understand that as a former Head of State, he was expected to rise above partisan politics and serve as a unifying figure.”

Lamido concluded that Buhari’s political conduct was inconsistent with the responsibilities of a statesman, noting that in his pursuit of power, he often crossed lines that should have remained untouched.

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

PDP urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to focus on governance rather than what it described as attempts to revive old political narratives.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.
