EFCC Drops Bombshell: Fresh Multi-Billion Naira Corruption Charges Hit Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed new corruption charges against former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, accusing him of acquiring a vast real estate estate in Abuja and laundering billions of naira through proxy accounts.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to court documents obtained by Premium Times, the EFCC on Friday filed an eight-count charge against Emefiele at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The anti-graft agency alleged that, while serving as CBN governor, Emefiele collaborated with Eric Ocheme—now reportedly on the run—to acquire a prime estate at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja. The estate spans over 150,000 square metres and comprises 753 housing units.

Though the legal owner of the estate was not disclosed in the charge sheet, the EFCC had previously secured a court order to seize the property and handed it over to the federal government. Emefiele has since appealed the ruling at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, seeking to regain control of the estate.

In addition to the real estate allegations, the EFCC accused Emefiele of operating multiple proxy bank accounts used to launder funds suspected to be proceeds of corruption. Between January and December 2019, ₦167 million was allegedly held in a proxy account with Zenith Bank.

In 2020, prosecutors claimed ₦1.23 billion was traced to the Zenith Bank account of Kelvito Integrated Services, a company jointly controlled by Emefiele and Ocheme. The same account reportedly laundered ₦2.94 billion in 2021 and ₦1.98 billion in 2022.

The EFCC further alleged that Emefiele held ₦900 million in an account belonging to Ifedigo Integrated Services, with an additional ₦600 million deposited in the same account in 2022.

Forgery Allegations

Among the most serious allegations is a charge of forgery. In January 2021, Emefiele allegedly forged a document titled “Irrevocable Power of Attorney Between MG Properties Limited and H and Y Business Global Limited” in a bid to mislead stakeholders about its legal standing.

The EFCC stated that these actions violate Sections 319, 362, and 364 of the Penal Code.

This fresh case piles onto a string of corruption charges already hanging over the former CBN boss. In Lagos, he is also being tried for allegedly fraudulently allocating $2 billion in foreign exchange. Additional charges include criminal conspiracy, abuse of office, and conferring undue advantage.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
