Declare Child Protection a National Security Priority, Activist Urges Tinubu
Child rights advocate and convener of the Operation Save Nigerian Children Campaign, Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho, has urged the Federal Government to classify child protection as a national security priority.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Tuesday during a Children’s Day address in Uyo, Aghogho expressed concern over what he described as the government’s persistent neglect of vulnerable children—especially street children and those trapped in the unregulated almajiri system.
“Across northern Nigeria, thousands of almajiri children wander untended, unfed, and unschooled. They are daily targets for recruitment by terrorist groups like Boko Haram and armed bandits,” Aghogho stated.
He warned that this widespread abandonment has not only violated the Child Rights Act of 2003 but has also become a national emergency, posing a direct threat to Nigeria’s peace and stability.
“These children are being indoctrinated and turned into instruments of violence—what I call ‘soldiers of the devil.’”
Aghogho called on President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, and other relevant institutions to take urgent action.
“Let it be known: a nation that abandons its children abandons its future. We must invest in inclusive education, healthcare, shelter, and psychosocial support for every Nigerian child.”
He also drew attention to what he described as nature’s response to societal neglect, linking recurring issues such as floods, famine, insecurity, and instability to systemic failures to protect children.
Offering to partner with the Federal Government, Aghogho emphasized that his organization possesses the grassroots insight, policy strategies, and human rights expertise needed to restore dignity, hope, and purpose to Nigeria’s most vulnerable youth.
“Let us not wait for another insurgency or national disaster before we act. The time to protect our children—and secure our nation—is now.”
