Bold Move! Minister Tunji-Ojo Advocates Electoral Reform for Security Personnel”
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has advocated for a review of Nigeria’s Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Tunji-Ojo expressed concern that security personnel are routinely denied their right to vote due to the absence of provisions for early voting in the current electoral laws.
According to reports, the minister made this appeal on Wednesday during a meeting with the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Musa, in Abuja.
He explained that the purpose of the visit was to explore the possibility of introducing a bill that would amend the Electoral Act to allow early voting for groups that have long been sidelined in the electoral process.
“During our discussions, we highlighted certain segments of society—particularly security agents and healthcare workers—who are consistently on essential duty during elections and deserve to be included,” Tunji-Ojo said.
He emphasized that such a bill, if passed, would bring Nigeria’s electoral framework in line with international democratic standards.
“We believe this important and carefully considered bill, once enacted, will enhance our electoral system and make it more inclusive by working hand in hand with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reflect global best practices,” he noted.
The Minister also reiterated his dedication to creating an inclusive and efficient democratic process.
“As progressives, our focus should be on building a strong, inclusive system. Any reform that advances this goal should be welcomed wholeheartedly,” he added.
