Gunmen Kill Pastor, Seven Others in Plateau Attacks

The chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, Kefas Mallai, confirmed the tragic events to PUNCH on Tuesday. He revealed that the violence began late Sunday night when Pastor Mimang Lekyil of COCIN LCC, Kwakas-Mushere, was attacked in his residence and killed. His wife sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is currently receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital.

The unrest escalated on Monday when enraged native youths reportedly set fire to Fulani-owned structures in Kwakas in retaliation for the pastor’s killing. Security operatives intervened and managed to restore order temporarily.

However, according to Mallai, suspected herdsmen launched a reprisal attack later that evening, around 9 p.m., targeting the Mbor community in Mushere, where seven residents were killed.

He described the worsening security situation: “On Monday night, armed herders attacked Mbor and killed seven locals. Despite alerts, the attackers struck before security forces could arrive. The insecurity has forced women and children from Kopmur and surrounding villages to flee to safer areas.”

Mallai also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities. “I’ve contacted the Divisional Police Officer, but his line was unreachable. The Divisional Crime Officer told me security personnel had been deployed, but the residents are still raising concerns about inadequate protection,” he said.

Responding to the attacks, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, confirmed that the situation was under control. He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, had deployed additional operatives to the affected areas to restore peace.
