A key witness in the corruption trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, told the Lagos Special Offences Court in Ikeja on Monday that there is no documentation to prove he delivered $400,000 to the ex-CBN boss.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

John Adetola, a former executive assistant to Emefiele and the seventh prosecution witness, made this statement before Justice Rahman Oshodi. He admitted there was no written record, WhatsApp chat, or phone call log submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to confirm the transaction.

Emefiele and co-defendant Henry Omoile face a 19-count charge involving alleged gratification and illicit enrichment totaling $4.5 billion and ₦2.8 billion.

Adetola previously testified that in 2018, he was instructed via WhatsApp by Eric Odoh to collect $400,000 from John Ayoh, a former CBN Director of IT, and deliver it to Emefiele in Lagos. He said he followed the instructions and handed over an envelope containing the cash but failed to document the handover.

Under cross-examination by Emefiele’s lawyer, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), Adetola confirmed:

  • He is not being prosecuted.

  • He had no agreement with EFCC in exchange for leniency.

  • His written statement to EFCC made no mention of direct communication with Emefiele.

He explained:

“I did not see any need to document the transaction.”

Adetola said he spent 11 days in EFCC custody, where he was interrogated over the alleged payment. Though the EFCC confronted him with WhatsApp chat printouts, none showed direct communication with Emefiele.

The witness, who holds an HND in Secretarial Studies and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, said he managed the CBN Governor’s secretariat and reported directly to him.

During further questioning by Yinka Kotoye (SAN), representing Omoile, Adetola stated he had no dealings with the second defendant.

In a brief re-examination, EFCC lead counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), asked why the transaction wasn’t recorded. Adetola again replied,

“I did not see any need for it.”

Justice Oshodi then discharged the witness and adjourned the matter until Tuesday for the continuation of the trial.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.
