NAFDAC: Peter Obi condemns N700,000 reopening fee for Onitsha traders
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has condemned the N700,000 reopening fee reportedly demanded from shop owners at the Onitsha Head Bridge Market in Anambra State. He called the fee unjust and a form of economic sabotage against struggling small business owners.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Obi expressed his disapproval in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday. He urged relevant authorities to reconsider and waive the charges, highlighting the financial strain already faced by the affected traders.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) had earlier designated the Head Bridge Market as a hub for counterfeit and substandard pharmaceutical products in Nigeria and across parts of Africa. In April, NAFDAC announced the market’s reopening under strict conditions, requiring traders to comply before regaining access to their shops.
However, Obi criticized what he described as excessive penalties, especially the continued closure of surrounding markets not implicated in the offenses. He argued that many traders had already suffered enough from prolonged closure, unpaid bills, and economic hardship.
“I visited the market at the start of its closure, standing with authorities to support efforts to eliminate fake drugs. But I hoped investigations would be swift, and the market would reopen quickly to relieve affected small business owners,” he said.
Obi lamented that in the current economic climate, demanding such high fees from traders only worsens their situation.
“Our MSMEs are already suffocating under immense pressure. Over 7 million have collapsed in the past two years. Instead of supporting them, the system is choking their survival,” he noted.
Calling for compassion-driven governance, Obi urged authorities to act with empathy and prioritize the survival and recovery of small businesses, which he described as the backbone of Nigeria’s economy.
“Government actions must be rooted in compassion. We cannot continue to burden the very people we expect to drive economic revival,” he added.
