The Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party (LP) has expressed enthusiasm over Peter Obi’s announcement that he intends to contest the 2027 presidential election under the party’s platform.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking to The Punch on Sunday, the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said the party welcomed Obi’s renewed interest, despite ongoing internal disputes.

Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, had confirmed during a meeting with his supporters over the weekend that he remained a member of the LP and would contest in 2027 under its banner.

“I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party,” Obi declared in a viral video circulating on social media.

The Labour Party remains divided, with Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti backing a rival faction led by Nenadi Usman, who seeks to replace Abure as party leader. Despite a recent Supreme Court decision, the leadership dispute remains unresolved. However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recognized the Abure-led faction’s candidate for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election.

Commenting on Obi’s declaration, Ifoh said, “We are excited about the news. After waiting patiently for almost two years, this is a positive signal. Now we can start charting a clear path forward.”

He emphasized that politics is driven by shared interests and that the LP, like most Nigerians, desires a capable leadership to steer the country out of crises.

“In 2023, we trusted Obi with our ticket, and he didn’t disappoint. It was the system that failed him,” he added.

On the question of whether Obi had been in contact with Abure, Ifoh acknowledged that communication between them hadn’t broken down completely.

“There are informal talks happening. With the Anambra elections coming up soon, and Obi being from that state, we expect him to contribute meaningfully to the party’s success there,” Ifoh said.

He further noted that any differences could be resolved before the 2027 polls: “If he truly wants to run under the Labour Party again, it’s a win-win for everyone. We’ll act on it when the time is right.”

Coalition Disruption

Obi’s reaffirmation of his LP membership has reportedly unsettled some stakeholders in the opposition coalition being formed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Reacting to Obi’s statement, a coalition insider and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, expressed surprise.

Chaos On Tracks: Abuja–Kaduna Train Breaks Down Mid-Trip, Passengers Stranded For Hours.

“I just read about it myself. You’ll have to ask Obi what he’s thinking,” Lawal told The Punch.

Obi, meanwhile, has accused the Nigerian government of fueling internal divisions within opposition parties, including the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“What’s happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is the result of government interference. Quote me anywhere,” he said, referencing his past experience with late President Umaru Yar’Adua, who intervened to resolve a party issue by instructing the INEC chairman to step in.

Obi argued that the current political chaos is deliberate and systemic, a problem he hopes to tackle if elected.

He also called on Nigerians to stay politically active and ensure their votes count, noting that political change would always face resistance from entrenched interests.

Additionally, Obi advocated for a retirement age for politicians, revealing that he would be 65 in 2027 and had no desire to remain in electoral politics into his 70s.

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

PDP urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to focus on governance rather than what it described as attempts to revive old political narratives.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.

He advocated issue-based campaigns ahead of 2027, rejecting “money politics” and challenging aspirants to public debates on governance.

Showunmi maintained that he has no history of violence or political thuggery, insisting the election should be centred on ideas and development plans for the state.

In response, IPAC leadership and other political actors at the event called for collaboration and careful selection of leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
