Organ Trade: FG to Establish National Registry Following PUNCH Exposé
In the wake of an explosive two-part investigation by Saturday PUNCH into the surging organ trafficking crisis in Nigeria, the Federal Government has vowed to prosecute all medical personnel and institutions implicated in such illicit activities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Reacting swiftly, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare disclosed plans to establish a National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Registry aimed at enforcing regulatory standards and ethical practices in organ transplantation nationwide.
The report titled “Organ Trafficking: Unmasking Ritual Killing Lies Behind Booming Human Parts Trade” uncovered a growing underground network where vulnerable individuals are deceived or abducted and their organs harvested under the false guise of ritual practices.
One notable case involved Mrs. Kehinde Kamal, a 45-year-old mother of four, who discovered years after a routine surgery that her kidney had been removed without consent. Investigations later revealed that the operator of the clinic, Mr. Noah Kekere, was not a licensed doctor. Despite his arrest, there has been no formal prosecution as of press time.
The exposé drew significant national attention, prompting renewed calls for stricter regulatory oversight of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Experts and international stakeholders have echoed the concerns, citing growing links between ritual killings, kidnapping, and illegal organ trade across Sub-Saharan Africa. At a 2023 U.S. Congressional hearing, experts including Miriam Fullah of World Hope International testified to the widespread trafficking of children for ritual abuse and organ harvesting.
In response, the Federal Government has introduced new transplant guidelines and launched a comprehensive mapping of all facilities involved in organ and tissue transplantation, including fertility clinics. According to Dr. Salaudeen Jimoh, Director of Hospital Services, only facilities that meet stringent ethical and operational standards will be accredited.
The government’s new framework emphasizes transparency, accountability, and compliance with global best practices. Violations, officials insist, will be met with strict legal sanctions.
The National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Registry will serve as a centralized database for monitoring transplantation activities and ensuring only certified facilities and professionals operate within the space.
This initiative, authorities believe, marks a turning point in restoring public trust in Nigeria’s healthcare system and curbing the exploitation of vulnerable populations.
