CSOs Demand Justice Over Killing of Four-Year-Old in Sokoto
A coalition of civil society organisations has strongly condemned the abduction and gruesome killing of four-year-old Ayman Abubakar in Sokoto State, calling for a transparent investigation and immediate justice.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
At a press conference held Saturday at the American Corner in Sokoto, leaders of the Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL), the Child Protection Network (CPN), and the Sokoto Response Team on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence/Child Protection described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that underscores the urgent need to protect Nigerian children.
The coalition’s leaders—NACTAL President Abdulganiyu Abubakar, CPN State Coordinator Usman Ahmad Suka, and SGBV Response Team Chairman Rabiu Bello Gandi—issued a joint statement expressing sympathy to the bereaved family and demanding accountability.
“We stand in solidarity with Ayman’s family and every Nigerian parent who has suffered such unimaginable loss. No parent should ever face such horror,” the statement read.
They commended the Sokoto State Police Command for reopening the investigation and urged law enforcement to move swiftly, ensuring transparency at every stage.
Their demands included:
-
A full and open investigation into the circumstances of Ayman’s abduction and murder
-
Immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible
-
Regular updates to the public on the case’s progress
-
Reinforcement of child safety protocols in schools, religious centers, and communities
The groups also appealed to the Sokoto State Government, traditional rulers, and security agencies to work collectively to deliver justice and bolster child protection systems.
“The safety of every Nigerian child must be treated as a national emergency. Justice for Ayman is justice for all,” they affirmed.
Speaking emotionally at the event, Ayman’s father, Dr. Abubakar, called on Nigerians and the media to amplify the call for justice.
“We can’t bring Ayman back, but we must hold those responsible accountable,” he said.
Dr. Abubakar recounted that his son disappeared on March 29—Sallah eve—after attending mosque prayers. He was last seen with a neighbor’s child, who later claimed Ayman was taken by men in a vehicle.
After more than seven weeks of searching, Ayman’s body was discovered on May 15. The neighbor reportedly identified the vehicle used in the abduction, and police have confirmed that multiple suspects are in custody. An autopsy report is expected soon.
