Sit-at-Home Orders Losing Steam in South-East, Says NSA Ribadu
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu has said that the enforced sit-at-home orders in Nigeria’s South-East are increasingly ineffective due to ongoing security operations against secessionist groups.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ribadu made the remarks on Thursday during a presentation at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national summit, highlighting the security gains under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to the NSA, the administration inherited five major security challenges: Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, separatist agitations by IPOB and ESN in the South-East, unrest in the Niger Delta, and farmer-herder conflicts in the North-Central region.
“In the South-East, a welcome development is that the sit-at-home orders are becoming increasingly ineffective,” Ribadu said, noting that several key IPOB/ESN figures have been neutralised or captured, and many police formations rebuilt.
He further revealed that attacks on security forces have declined, and economic and social life is gradually returning to normal in the region.
In the broader fight against insurgency, Ribadu said 13,543 Boko Haram fighters have been neutralised, and over 11,000 weapons recovered. He also disclosed that 124,408 insurgents and family members have surrendered since the Tinubu administration began.
In the North-West, he reported a significant reduction in mass abductions, with over 11,250 hostages freed and top bandit leaders including Ali Kachalla and Boderi neutralised.
Ribadu emphasized that despite setbacks, military operations continue in critical areas such as the Timbuktu Triangle and Tumbu Islands, stressing the administration’s commitment to restoring peace nationwide.
