Speaking at the LASU-NACOLM Transport and Logistics Conference and Induction held at Lagos State University, Ojo, Obayendo credited the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) for driving the state’s infrastructure transformation.
Themed “Safety and Security in the Transportation Sector: The Way Forward,” the event highlighted policy advancements and innovation in the sector.
Obayendo emphasized that Lagos has distinguished itself through its strategic planning, effective policy implementation, and structural development in public transport.
“I’ve visited all 36 states, and Lagos is ahead in terms of transportation structure and policy. While other states appear inactive or overwhelmed, Lagos continues to lead,” he said.
He praised LAMATA’s efforts in upgrading from informal minibuses (known locally as Korope) to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, stating that although the results are not yet fully visible, the foundation has been firmly established over the past five years.
He added, “Most people are unaware of the groundwork being laid by LAMATA, but they’ve been consistent. Their commitment to positioning Lagos as a transport leader is clear.”
Obayendo also underscored the institute’s ongoing advocacy for a comprehensive national transport policy, citing recent progress under the current federal administration.
“For the first time, a national transport policy bill has been passed, which is a significant milestone. Until now, Nigeria lacked a clear roadmap for transport sector development,” he noted.
Rasheed Ayelabegan, CIoTA’s Registrar, reiterated that security and safety are not only central to transport operations but to national life as a whole.
CIoTA Lagos Chapter Chairman, Taiwo Salaam, also emphasized the importance of safety awareness, noting that the conference was organized to share practical safety strategies.
