Kano clears 84 stranded Cyprus students’ N2.24bn tuition
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has intervened in a long-standing issue involving 84 students stranded in Northern Cyprus after their scholarship program was discontinued by the previous administration. The students, who were unable to complete their degrees or collect their certificates, faced severe hardships, including eviction from hostels and legal threats. The total debt of N2.24 billion has now been cleared by the current government. Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, emphasized that the payment was both a humanitarian and moral obligation, aiming to correct the wrongs of the past.
The students’ families expressed immense relief and gratitude. Many of them, moved by the news, thanked the governor for his intervention. In addition to clearing their fees, Governor Yusuf has also approved automatic employment for the graduates within the Kano State Civil Service, ensuring their skills are retained in the state.
The intervention has been widely praised by educational advocates, human rights groups, and diaspora organizations. It has also sparked renewed calls for policy continuity in educational initiatives, suggesting that such programs should be insulated from political changes in the future.
Governor Yusuf has made education a key priority in his administration, with investments in scholarships, school feeding programs, and infrastructure. This latest move also marks the end of a painful chapter for the affected students and their families.
