Gbajabiamila Urges Nigerian Varsities to Attract Foreign Students for Funding
The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has called on Nigerian universities to actively recruit foreign students as a strategic way to diversify income and reduce dependency on government funding.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking at the maiden annual lecture of Osun State University, held in Osogbo, Gbajabiamila highlighted the pressing need for alternative revenue streams to support Nigeria’s over 130 public universities amid rising demand and dwindling public funds.
Citing global best practices, he said universities in countries like Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa have successfully drawn international students—often including Nigerians—who pay higher fees, and Nigerian universities should follow suit. He stressed that this approach could generate significant revenue and help preserve the academic quality of public institutions.
“If we don’t act urgently, our universities risk becoming mere diploma mills,” he warned, adding that the federal and state governments cannot sustainably shoulder the growing financial burden alone.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke praised the lecture series initiative and expressed confidence that Gbajabiamila’s insights would guide meaningful education reforms across Nigeria.
The event’s theme, “Interrogating the Funding of Education: Global versus Nigerian Perspectives”, focused on rethinking sustainable funding strategies in line with international trends.
