2007 Polls Were Massively Flawed, Yar’Adua Ignored My Advice – Lamido
Former Jigawa State Governor and ex-National Secretary of the defunct Social Democratic Party, Sule Lamido, has revealed that the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua knowingly admitted that the 2007 general elections were marred by massive irregularities, despite strong counsel to reword the statement.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In his newly released autobiography, Being True to Myself, Lamido recounts a key moment in Chapter 11: The Yar’Adua Presidency, where he advised the president to revise a memo that was to be presented at the first National Council of State meeting.
Lamido urged Yar’Adua to soften the preamble of the electoral reform memo, which began with: “In view of the large-scale irregularities in the conduct of the last elections…” suggesting instead a more diplomatic phrase: “In view of the desire to reform our electoral system.” He warned the president that such wording would imply self-denouncement of his mandate and cast a shadow on the integrity of officials like former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Justice Katsina-Alu, who were present at the meeting and had roles in the election process.
However, Yar’Adua refused to amend the memo. According to Lamido, the president read the original draft to the full Council, openly acknowledging the flawed nature of the elections that brought him to power. Lamido said this moment left many council members shocked and could have contributed to the eventual fallout between Yar’Adua and Obasanjo.
The disclosure offers fresh insight into Yar’Adua’s early moves for electoral reform and the tension it created within Nigeria’s political elite.
