A major scare unfolded on Tuesday evening when a fuel tanker toppled on the deteriorated Asaba-Onitsha expressway in Delta State, prompting residents and motorists to flee in fear of a potential explosion.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred around 7:00 p.m. near the Ezenei axis. The fallen tanker began leaking fuel, which flowed into nearby drains around the Ajaji (Bonsac) area, causing widespread panic.

Security personnel, including officers from the Nigeria Police and the Delta State Fire Service, were quickly deployed to the scene. Authorities sealed off both sides of the highway and remained stationed overnight to prevent fuel scooping and mitigate any risk of fire. Water tankers were also kept on standby in case of ignition.

By Wednesday morning, the overturned truck remained on-site, causing severe traffic congestion. Although chemicals and water had been sprayed to neutralize the fuel, residents expressed lingering fears over the safety of the area.

One resident, Mr. Eugene Ekene, recounted the chaos: “We thank God there was no explosion. Everyone fled. I broke my leg while trying to escape. The smell of fuel is still strong this morning, and there’s a woman frying akara nearby—what if fire breaks out?”

Human rights advocate Mr. Okolo Linus commended emergency responders but criticized the Delta State Government for its inaction. “I appreciate the efforts of the police and fire service,” he said, “but I condemn the governor’s indifference. Though it’s a federal road, the state could have stepped in for the safety of its citizens.”

He further accused both federal and state leadership of neglect, arguing that lives continue to be endangered by inaction and bureaucracy.

The Asaba-Onitsha road, long notorious for its poor condition, has been the site of numerous accidents. This latest incident underscores the urgent need for intervention before tragedy strikes.
