Edo CP Raises Alarm Over Kidnappers’ Use of Hostages as Human Shields

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has expressed deep concern over the growing tactic employed by kidnappers who now use abducted victims as human shields to evade arrest and deter police gunfire.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking at a press conference to mark his first month in office, Agbonika highlighted the risks faced by operatives during rescue missions, revealing that while the police refrain from opening fire to avoid harming captives, kidnappers take advantage of this to launch attacks.

He disclosed that within the past month, the command successfully rescued seven kidnap victims and apprehended 12 suspected kidnappers, many of whom have confessed. In the same period, 95 suspected cultists were arrested and have been charged in court.

The commissioner further reported the recovery of 25 firearms, including two AK-47 rifles, English pistols, single-barrel guns, and over 265 rounds of ammunition. Additionally, four stolen vehicles and other items such as a Beretta pistol, a Lar Mark rifle, and an iPhone 16 Plus were recovered during operations.

Agbonika assured the public that the command is exploring advanced technological solutions to track and neutralize kidnappers without endangering hostages. He emphasized a shift toward intelligence-driven operations, community collaboration, forest surveillance, and the restructuring of local vigilante groups to serve strictly within their communities.

He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to proactive measures that will prevent kidnapping before it occurs and pledged continuous efforts to maintain law and order across Edo State.

According to a weather update shared on Sunday via its official X handle, NiMet said the day is expected to begin with hot and sunny conditions in many areas before changing later.

In the North, morning heat is expected to give way to isolated thunderstorms later in the day, with places like Taraba likely to experience brief storms and gusty winds.

For the North-Central region, the agency predicted a warm and calm start, followed by possible thunderstorms and rainfall in some states, while others may experience strong winds. Affected areas may include Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory.

In the South, more intense storm activity is expected as the day progresses, with states such as Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Enugu, Anambra, Rivers, and Delta likely to see rain, lightning, and possible disruption to outdoor activities.

NiMet advised residents to take precautions, including securing loose items that could be affected by strong winds and avoiding unnecessary travel during heavy rain due to reduced visibility and slippery roads.

It also warned against staying in flood-prone areas during rainfall and urged people to seek safe shelter during lightning activity.

Airlines were also advised to obtain regular weather updates from NiMet offices to ensure safe flight operations.
