In a sweeping political shift, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Dennis Guwor, and 21 other lawmakers formally announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This move effectively transforms the House into an all-APC chamber, as the remaining seven members were already affiliated with the ruling party at the federal level.

Speaking at the Assembly’s plenary session after the Easter recess, Speaker Guwor attributed the mass defection to consultations with constituents and political leaders, combined with instability in the PDP’s national and South-South zonal leadership. He cited Section 109 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the switch.

Guwor emphasized that the lawmakers’ decision aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s push to reposition the state in tandem with the federal administration under President Bola Tinubu. The defection followed meetings held in April and an official welcome ceremony hosted at the Government House and Cenotaph.

“The Delta Assembly is now fully aligned with the APC, and we pledge to support the Federal Government’s development agenda,” Guwor declared, commending Governor Oborevwori’s “visionary leadership.”

Speaking to the press, Nwaobi reiterated that internal party crises at both national and regional levels made continued membership in the PDP untenable.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
