Wike, PDP Governors Strike Unity Deal Ahead of 2027 Elections

Published

on

In a significant step toward resolving long-standing internal divisions, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reached an agreement with governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to work towards unifying the party in preparation for the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The meeting, which took place last week in Lagos, saw Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde representing the PDP governors. Discussions centered on mending the rift in Rivers State between Wike and suspended Governor Sim Fubara, addressing disputes over the party’s South-South zonal leadership, and resolving the stalemate surrounding the position of the National Secretary.

Since the 2023 general elections, the PDP has grappled with internal strife, which worsened due to disagreements among party leaders. Efforts by the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, and PDP Governors Forum to mediate had, until now, deepened factional tensions.

Notably, recent defections — including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa — to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have further weakened the PDP’s public image and electoral prospects.

According to a source close to Governor Makinde, Wike expressed dissatisfaction during the meeting with what he described as unlawful and unilateral decisions by the PDP Governors Forum, especially concerning critical appointments and the political crisis in Rivers State.

Despite his grievances, Wike reportedly reaffirmed his commitment to remaining in the PDP, but called on the party’s leadership to reconsider key decisions in the interest of fairness, peace, and unity.

Makinde, in turn, acknowledged frustrations over the conduct of some PDP officials and assured Wike of his support. He promised to update fellow governors at their next forum meeting and emphasized the need for members involved in internal disputes to drop all legal actions and seek political solutions instead.

Both leaders agreed that for the PDP to move forward, past decisions, especially those relating to the South-South zonal congress, the National Secretary seat, and the Rivers State situation, must be re-evaluated to reflect a broader consensus.

A senior member of the PDP’s National Working Committee, speaking anonymously, confirmed the Lagos meeting, saying the resolutions reached between Wike and Makinde could significantly aid the party’s efforts to rebuild and reestablish itself ahead of 2027.

In the agriculture and food sector, the importation of poultry, pork, beef, and eggs remains banned, although an exception was made for hatching eggs used for breeding and research purposes.

Retail-packaged vegetable oils, sugar products, cocoa derivatives, tomato paste, and certain bottled water products are also included in the import restrictions, with emphasis on encouraging local production.

ADC chieftain and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, describing the push as unfair and politically motivated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Momodu was reacting to comments by activist Zekeri Idris Jnr, a supporter of Peter Obi, who urged Atiku to step aside over concerns about his age, which would be about 80 by 2027.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Momodu said attention should be focused on holding the government accountable rather than targeting Atiku’s political ambition.

The exchange followed a viral video where Idris insisted that Atiku should support younger aspirants instead of contesting, arguing that voters would not back an elderly candidate.

Idris also suggested that Atiku should act as a statesman and support younger politicians such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others.

Responding, Momodu cited several world leaders who held office at advanced ages, arguing that experience should not be dismissed in leadership discussions.

He questioned what should disqualify Atiku from contesting, insisting that age alone is not a valid reason.

Atiku, who lost the 2023 presidential election to President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly considering another run in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
