Terror Strikes Again: Armed Group Razes Homes in Niger Republic’s Makalondi
A fresh wave of violence hit Makalondi, a town in the Tillabéri region of Niger Republic, on the evening of Saturday, May 3, as suspected militants from the armed group GANE launched a brutal attack, setting homes and commercial structures ablaze.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The assault, which began at approximately 7 p.m., was marked by heavy gunfire, with several buildings—including shops, storage facilities, and roadside stalls—consumed by flames. Eyewitnesses described a town gripped by fear, with residents either fleeing or taking shelter indoors amid the chaos.
“We’re trapped, completely isolated since the earlier attack on Thursday,” a distressed local resident said. “It feels like we’ve been abandoned.”
This recent onslaught follows a May 1 attack, during which the head of the local school management committee (COGES) and a local businessman were killed. Since then, Makalondi has remained cut off, with residents lamenting the absence of a security response from Nigerien authorities.
Makalondi is situated in the volatile tri-border zone between Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali—a region notorious for insurgent and militant activity. Locals have increasingly criticized the military-led CNSP government for its perceived inaction in the face of escalating insecurity.
“We are alone in this. Fear has become our daily companion,” another resident reported via local contacts. “We urgently need both regional and international intervention—this must stop.”
The incident underscores the deteriorating security situation in parts of Niger Republic, where communities like Makalondi continue to face relentless violence with minimal protection or response.
