Meta Threatens to Exit Nigeria Amid $300 Million Fine Over Regulatory Disputes
Meta is considering shutting down its Facebook and Instagram services in Nigeria in response to a series of significant fines imposed by various government agencies. The tech company is facing nearly $300 million in penalties from regulatory bodies, which it has described as “unrealistic.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In July 2024, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) levied a $220 million fine on Meta for allegedly exploiting Nigerian consumers and failing to meet regulatory requirements, such as engaging a Data Protection Compliance Organisation and submitting an audit report for the Nigerian Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) for two consecutive years.
The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) also imposed a $37.5 million fine for unapproved advertisements, and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) slapped another $32.8 million fine for violations related to data privacy breaches.
Meta challenged the fines in the Federal High Court in Abuja, but the court upheld the penalties last week and set a June deadline for the company to pay. Meta, however, has hinted at the possibility of discontinuing Facebook and Instagram services in Nigeria if the situation escalates.
In court documents, Meta warned that it may be forced to shut down its services in Nigeria to avoid further legal and financial consequences. The company also criticized the NDPC’s claims that its data processing practices posed health and financial risks to Nigerian users, arguing that the agency had misunderstood the relevant data privacy laws.
