The Federal Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to preserving press freedom, even as the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) introduces new complexities to the media landscape. This assurance came from the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement delivered on Saturday to mark World Press Freedom Day.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on the theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” Idris emphasized the essential role of a free and responsible press in sustaining democracy. He called on stakeholders — including the government, journalists, and civil society — to unite in defending freedom of expression while embracing technological advancements responsibly.

“A free and accountable media remains the cornerstone of democracy. It empowers citizens and holds leadership accountable,” the minister noted, reaffirming the Tinubu administration’s stance that press freedom is non-negotiable.

To address the ethical challenges posed by AI, Idris revealed that the Federal Government is currently developing a national policy framework that will guide the responsible deployment of AI in media. The framework, he said, is designed to ensure that technological innovation supports — rather than erodes — media ethics, press freedom, and national security.

Raising concern about AI-related risks, such as the proliferation of deepfakes and disinformation campaigns, Idris warned against allowing media platforms to be exploited for extremist or anti-state purposes. “When misinformation is weaponized, the media must rise as a guardian of truth and reject manipulated content that threatens social cohesion and public trust,” he stated.

He urged media outlets to remain vigilant, ensuring their platforms — whether traditional or digital — are not hijacked by subversive groups or ideologies that could jeopardize national stability.

Concluding his address, Idris encouraged all media stakeholders to remain committed to defending journalistic freedom while upholding national values and democratic principles.

“Happy World Press Freedom Day,” the minister said.

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.
