Nigerian Army Eliminates Key Bandit Leaders in Zamfara, Seizes Weapons
The Nigerian Army’s 1 Brigade, under the command of Brigadier General Timothy Opurum, has reported significant success in its ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry in Zamfara State. The operation, which took place in Mai Kwanugga village, Talata-Mafara LGA, saw the bandits engaging in violent attacks, setting houses on fire and terrorizing locals before troops arrived. Upon encountering the armed bandits, the Nigerian Army troops engaged in a fierce gun battle, leading to the deaths of five notorious bandit leaders: Auta Jijji, Dankali, Sagidi, Kachallah Rijaji, and Kachallah Suza. The troops successfully pursued the fleeing bandits, recovering a cache of weapons that included AK-47 rifles, RPG tubes, and several rounds of ammunition.
Despite the operation’s success, two civilians were unfortunately caught in the crossfire. The situation remains under close monitoring, with continued efforts to neutralize any remaining threats in the region. Additionally, Captain Omale confirmed that local residents provided further information that aided the ongoing operation.
In a separate development, on May 1, 2025, troops from Combat Team 2 (CT 2), along with other security agencies, intervened in Dayau village, Kaura-Namoda LGA, to quell a protest by residents frustrated by recent bandit attacks. The protestors had blocked a major supply route by burning tires. Security forces conducted a peaceful dispersal, restoring order and reopening the road.
Brigadier General Opurum commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by the troops during these operations and reassured citizens of the army’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security throughout Zamfara State.
