Speaking during the 2025 Workers Day celebration at Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri, Nwigwe acknowledged Governor Uzodinma’s strides in improving the welfare of civil servants. He highlighted the establishment of a reliable staff transportation system and upgrades to the state secretariat as commendable steps toward enhancing working conditions.

However, Nwigwe urged the Governor to prioritize clearing the backlog of unpaid gratuities, a problem inherited from past administrations. He noted that despite some progress, many pensioners are still awaiting their entitlements.

“We urge His Excellency to continue the payment exercise to reach all pensioners who are yet to be paid,” Nwigwe said, pledging continued support from workers to the administration’s developmental agenda.

Responding to the workers, Governor Uzodinma congratulated them on the occasion and reaffirmed his commitment to addressing unresolved issues, including shortfalls in the implementation of the new minimum wage and pending promotions.

He recalled the systemic neglect faced by Imo workers before 2020, including lack of promotions, irregular pension payments, and a manipulated payroll system. He contrasted that with the current administration’s reforms, including an automated payroll, regular salary disbursement, and payment of gratuities.

The Governor also revealed plans for a special salary structure tailored for teachers and medical professionals, aiming to attract skilled personnel in these critical sectors. Additionally, he commended the Imo State House of Assembly for repealing outdated legislation that hindered health sector reforms.

Encouraging civil servants to enroll in the government’s Health Insurance Scheme, Uzodinma emphasized its long-term benefits. He also warned against complacency and corruption, stressing the need for discipline and accountability in the public service.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
