Hakeem Baba-Ahmed Calls on Tinubu to Focus on North’s Struggles with Insecurity and Unemployment
In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to President Bola Tinubu, shared the northern region’s expectations from the current administration. Baba-Ahmed expressed concerns over what he perceives as the growing marginalization of the region. He explained that the North feels increasingly neglected by political leaders, particularly in terms of tangible interventions to address pressing issues.
Reflecting on a recent meeting with the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Baba-Ahmed noted a marked shift in tone. While the Northern Elders Forum, with which he is affiliated, tends to be more assertive, the meeting had an unusually direct and resolute atmosphere. He described the North’s mood as one of demand for change, stressing that citizens from the region expect more than just promises during elections.
The political figure conveyed that the North is often treated as a region of voters who are only courted during election seasons when politicians offer temporary reliefs such as food or cash. He emphasized that this situation must change, urging the administration to recognize the region’s importance beyond its electoral value.
Baba-Ahmed further articulated that the North is not interested in any rhetoric focused on regionalism but rather in pragmatic leadership that can address the area’s specific needs. He noted that as the country faces significant challenges, the North’s struggles are especially severe and must be given priority.
His comments reflect the urgent call from the region for the current administration to focus on more than just symbolic gestures and to commit to meaningful, lasting solutions to the region’s most pressing concerns.
