Governor Otti Blames Nigeria’s Economic Woes on Low Productivity, Calls for Action
The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has attributed Nigeria’s ongoing foreign exchange crisis to an underperforming economy. In an interview with Arise News, Governor Otti, a member of the Labour Party, stated that his administration is focused on creating an environment conducive for investment and productivity.
“Creating the right conditions for productivity is central to what we are doing,” Otti remarked.
The Governor lamented Nigeria’s over-reliance on crude oil exports, revealing that apart from oil, the country virtually imports everything, from everyday items like toothpicks to bottled water.
He also highlighted the absurdity of Nigeria’s palm oil importation, despite Malaysia having originally sourced the palm kernel from Umuahia, Abia State.
Otti noted, “A part of the problem with the exchange rate crisis is our lack of production. We’re importing everything from the trivial to the essential. Even palm oil, which Malaysians took from here in Umuahia, we now import.”
In response to the growing food importation issue, the Governor disclosed that his administration is collaborating with a private company to reduce Nigeria’s dependency on imported food, including palm oil.
Governor Otti emphasized that reversing the country’s import-heavy economic structure and increasing domestic production would alleviate the pressure on the foreign exchange market.
