During a press briefing on Friday, Commissioner of Police CP Ajao S. Adewale disclosed that the command recovered 21 stolen vehicles and seized an array of contraband and stolen property. These include large quantities of codeine and tramadol tablets, 225 tablets of Exol, 52 tablets of Diazepam, 149 mobile phones, 10 iPads/tablets, 14 laptops, 19 power banks, 10 POS machines, 15 motorcycles, 109 ATM cards, two generator sets, one axe, three scissors, and one crusher.

According to CP Adewale, a surge in vehicle thefts and drug-related activities prompted a series of intelligence-led operations and coordinated raids across key hotspots in the capital.

Among the high-profile arrests, 15 suspects were linked to car theft. One such case involved a suspect, Hassan Bukar, who was caught driving a stolen Toyota Camry (“pencil light”) taken from the premises of the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission. Bukar, who attempted to flee, was found with master keys and confessed he intended to sell the car in Kaduna.

Another incident involved a Toyota Camry 2011 reported missing by its owner after being left with a mechanic. Investigators tracked the vehicle to a buyer in Gwarinpa and arrested an intermediary, while the mechanic remains at large.

Additionally, a government-issued Hilux van was retrieved in Kaduna after it was allegedly taken without authorization by a driver, Abubakar Sadio, who also possessed another unregistered Hilux vehicle.

In yet another case, five suspects were apprehended in Life Camp while attempting to sell a stolen Mercedes Benz E-400, originally taken from its owner in Lekki, Lagos. The operation was intercepted after a suspicious buyer alerted the authorities.

CP Adewale highlighted the most extensive operation to date, which spanned April 30 to May 1. This multi-agency crackdown involved police, military personnel, vigilantes, and other security agents, resulting in the arrest of 1,488 suspects and the recovery of illicit substances and stolen property.

He reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to public safety and urged residents to support ongoing efforts by providing credible and timely information. He also assured the public that all suspects will face prosecution once investigations are completed.
