Cult Clash in Lagos Leaves One Dead as Rival Gangs Trade Blows

The incident, which occurred on Monday, was reportedly triggered by a retaliation effort from members of the Buccaneer cult group, who were seeking revenge for the killing of one of their own a week earlier. According to community sources, the Buccaneers encountered members of the Aiye cult group during their reprisal operation, leading to a violent confrontation.
During the altercation, a member of the Aiye group, identified only by the nickname “Sparkle,” was shot and killed on the spot.
A local resident recounted that the tension initially began when a Buccaneer cultist was gunned down while walking with his girlfriend in the same community. Although he was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, he was declared dead on arrival. The attack prompted the Buccaneers to mobilize in retaliation, culminating in Monday’s deadly encounter.
Residents now fear further escalation, as both the Buccaneer and Aiye groups are said to be planning additional retaliatory attacks. The situation has left many in the community anxious about the possibility of continued violence.
Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said he had not yet been briefed on the specific incident.
This development comes shortly after the Lagos Police Command arrested eight suspects in connection with separate cult-related killings in the Yaba area during a coordinated raid conducted on April 29, 2025.
