In a recent interview with Daily Trust, Muhammad recounted a peaceful and eye-opening conversation he had with his captor, identified as Abubakar, whom he met at the mosque. Despite the traumatic ordeal, Muhammad expressed that he had forgiven Abubakar, understanding that while some passengers did not survive, he was lucky to have come out alive.

Muhammad explained that during their encounter, Abubakar admitted to having repented and now works as a motorbike rider (Okada). He also shared the news of the death of one of their notorious commanders, Baba Adamu, who was killed by soldiers. This news brought a sense of relief to Muhammad.

However, Muhammad made it clear that while he had forgiven his captor, he could never forgive the Nigerian government for the attack. He criticized the government for ignoring intelligence reports that warned of a potential attack on the train, which led to the tragedy. Muhammad further expressed feelings of abandonment by the government after their release, stating that they were left to cover the expenses for necessary medical treatments and therapy on their own.

After spending 196 days—nearly seven months—in captivity, Muhammad revealed that the only assistance provided by the government was minimal, with only basic medical treatments offered. He and many other survivors were left to battle trauma and had to seek long-term psychiatric care at their own expense, without any support from the authorities.

Ufochukwu also noted that her agenda extends beyond trade, including the promotion of Nigeria’s culture, agriculture, and investment opportunities, as well as supporting training programmes in cybersecurity and information technology.

She assured stakeholders of her commitment to fully delivering on her responsibilities, adding that sustained communication and cooperation would be important in achieving set goals.

Participants at the forum highlighted the need for Nigeria to address structural barriers affecting business growth, while pointing to Israel’s innovation-driven economy as a model worth studying.

One of the attendees, Pastor Henry Opara, called for formal bilateral agreements, stressing that most current business interactions between both countries are informal and based on personal relationships rather than structured government frameworks.
