President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the widespread economic difficulties Nigerians are facing and reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to confront these challenges head-on. He stressed that while global economic pressures exist, Nigeria’s realities are especially harsh, and promised that his government would pursue decisive policies focused on job creation, poverty reduction, and protection of the vulnerable.
“This administration is fully aware of the severity of the hardships confronting Nigerians. We are committed to resolving them through sound economic strategies and social protections,” Tinubu stated.
He emphasized the importance of fostering an environment that guarantees decent work, dignity, and opportunities for all, noting that labour protections, fair treatment, and inclusiveness are central to his Renewed Hope Agenda.
The President also reiterated the need to reclaim and safeguard civic space, calling it essential for democratic development. He advocated for transparency, equity, and inclusive dialogue, affirming workers’ rights to organize, speak out, and shape decisions that affect them.
Looking ahead, Tinubu confirmed Nigeria’s readiness to join the International Labour Organization’s Global Coalition for Social Justice. The initiative, he explained, aligns with national goals by promoting employment, dignity, enterprise growth, inequality reduction, and skills investment.
He further stated that his administration is committed to fighting corruption, building trust, and ensuring a fairer distribution of opportunities.
Also speaking at the event, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, described May Day as a moment of reflection, recommitment, and solidarity with Nigerian workers. She acknowledged current economic strains but reassured workers that the government hears their concerns and values their resilience.
Concluding the address, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to unite in the pursuit of justice, equity, and national progress, asserting that together, the country can overcome its current difficulties and achieve a more prosperous future.
