Nigeria Launches E-Visa Policy to Curb Corruption, Speed Up Travel Processing Business

Published

on

Today marks the official rollout of Nigeria’s electronic visa (e-visa) system, a move that follows the recent training of 162 immigration officers in preparation for the digitised travel documentation process. The initiative—designed to streamline visa applications, enhance security, and curb corruption—has garnered both praise and scepticism from stakeholders across the board.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The new system reflects Nigeria’s alignment with global trends in digitising bureaucratic services. Unlike the traditional, paper-heavy visa procedures, the e-visa promises a faster, paperless experience, potentially cutting processing times to between 24 and 48 hours. Officials say the move will foster tourism and investment by simplifying entry into the country.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who supervised the training, highlighted the reform as part of the government’s broader goal to create a results-oriented immigration framework. He emphasised that Nigeria must open its doors to legitimate global travellers, and reiterated the country’s ambition to become a more attractive destination for business and leisure.

However, concerns remain. Critics—including retired immigration personnel—have warned that systemic issues like corruption, inadequate digital infrastructure, and national insecurity could undermine the policy’s success. Others caution that altering visa protocols might affect Nigeria’s reciprocal travel agreements, particularly for citizens who currently benefit from Visa-on-Arrival in other countries.

Despite these reservations, proponents like Tams Ngeri, a former immigration officer, lauded the initiative for its potential to boost foreign direct investment, provided foundational economic and security challenges are addressed. He argued that a simplified visa process correlates positively with investor confidence in stable economies.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), through its spokesperson A. S. Akinlabi, dismissed fears that the e-visa system might disrupt international reciprocity or fail due to internal inefficiencies. Instead, he described the policy as a work in progress with potential for positive transformation.

Similarly, Dr. Ajibola Abayomi, President of the Journalists International Forum for Migration (JIFORM), acknowledged both the optimism and apprehension surrounding the policy. He argued that while valid concerns exist, dismissing the initiative outright would be shortsighted. He stressed the need for solid digital infrastructure, cyber protection, and sustained political will to ensure long-term success.

Abayomi pointed to examples like Rwanda and Kenya, where similar visa reforms contributed to increased tourism and economic activity. However, he warned that without stability and consistent implementation, even the most well-intentioned policies could falter.

In sum, while the e-visa rollout marks a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s travel entry system, its long-term success will depend on how well the government addresses persistent internal challenges and maintains international cooperation.

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.
