EFCC Boss Admits Tough Battle Against Nigeria’s Corruption

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, the anti-graft czar revealed that while progress has been made, the fight against graft remains an uphill battle.

“Upon assuming office, we conducted a comprehensive review of EFCC’s operations over nearly two decades,” Olukoyede explained. “This led us to implement crucial reforms aimed at strengthening our processes and procedures.”

The EFCC boss emphasized that effective anti-corruption efforts require more than publicity stunts. “This work isn’t about making noise – it’s about creating tangible impact,” he stated, noting that part of their strategy involves using anti-corruption measures to stimulate economic growth.

Despite the challenges, Olukoyede reported measurable successes from the commission’s reform initiatives in 2024. “We’ve focused on institutional reforms and operational improvements,” he said, adding that these changes have guided their investigative approaches over the past eighteen months.

The chairman stressed the importance of maintaining seriousness in corruption cases, regardless of political affiliations. His comments come as the EFCC continues high-profile investigations and prosecutions across Nigeria.

He added that the project is not only focused on land recovery but also on boosting agricultural output and improving livelihoods in affected communities.

According to him, the effort is already helping to reduce dependence on firewood while creating alternative sources of income for beneficiaries.

He also approved an amendment extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to ensure completion of ongoing capital projects nationwide.

Under the 2026 fiscal plan, ₦4.799 trillion is set aside for statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent spending, while ₦32.2 trillion goes to capital projects—about half of the total budget.

The focus, according to the administration, is on infrastructure development, security, and growth-driven investments aimed at improving living standards.

In a statement on Friday, the party’s spokesperson, Olusegun Adewara, said the development is a disturbing and dangerous politicisation of a case they claim has already been addressed through judicial processes.
